Women’s soccer topples Michigan State

In their second victory in as many games against the Big Ten, the Milwaukee Panthers women’s soccer team took a 3-2 decision over the Michigan State Spartans at Shorewood High School on Sunday.

Junior Sarah Hagen boosted her career goal count to 50 early in the first half, drilling a shot past the MSU keeper just 10 minutes into the match.

Goals by Kenzie Gillaspie and Laurel Ragalie put the halftime score at 3-0, but the game wasn’t over yet.

Michigan State answered quickly with a goal from Laura Heyboer in the 46th minute past Milwaukee keeper Leslie Deebach. A second goal in the 52nd minute by Olivia Stander put the Spartans one goal away and Panther fans on the edge of their seats. However, the Panthers held off, including a free kick just 20 yards to the side of the goal, and the Panthers took the match 3-2.

Milwaukee set the tone for their upcoming road trip, where they’ll spend the rest of September on the road going into October. Following a game at Valley Fields on Wednesday against Marquette, the Panthers will play at Wisconsin, Kansas, Missouri, Youngstown State, Cleveland State, and Texas before their first match at Engelmann Field against Valparaiso on October 8th.

A source within the Milwaukee Athletic Department confirmed that the goal is to have Engelmann Field ready by the September 26th men’s match against Butler, but they should have it finished long before the October 8th match.
