Proof that the Journal-Sentinel hates us #2,345

Pearl was caught cheating; what does this have to do with us?

If you haven’t heard by now, you haven’t been around much: Bruce Pearl, the whistleblower on Illinois back in the late 1980’s, was caught improperly recruiting players at Tennessee.

This much you know.  Of course, if you found out through JSOnline.com, you’d have found that the story was filed under the Panthers section.  Why is that?  Bruce Pearl hasn’t been the coach of the Milwaukee Panthers since March, 2005.  He hasn’t had much to do with us since then; he came to Luke Homan’s funeral, but otherwise I haven’t seen him come here.  After graduation, Mark Pancratz joined Pearl as a graduate assistant and is still on the staff in a different role, but really Pearl’s Milwaukee ties are cut.

So why put this story on there?  It’s a bad story about Pearl, and connecting it to us puts the notion in people’s minds that this bad situation is somehow tied to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The Journal-Sentinel, much like the fan bases of Wisconsin and Marquette, would prefer if we were a Division II program.  It’s too bad, but the fact of the matter is that this guy made a choice to no longer be the coach of our Division I program and there is no reason to put this story on the JSOnline website as a “Panthers” story.  This is a “Volunteers” story and has nothing to do with us, at least outside of the possibility that maybe recruiting violations happened here while Pearl was head coach of Milwaukee.  Of course, it’s also possible that *PIECE REMOVED: REFER TO BOTTOM OF POST*  Reworded:  Say I told you that I saw a Marquette player leaving the Milwaukee Pro-Am in a flashy car, it doesn’t necessarily make it so.

Personally, I’m not surprised.  I’ve heard stories from multiple alumni who had met two separate Pearl recruits (luckily neither suited up) that raised eyebrows in terms of whether they were athletes or student-athletes.

No Pearl player that I’ve ever come across at UWM has given me the feeling that they weren’t students.  Jason McCoy, Derrick Ford, and others that I’ve had classes with worked hard and embodied the definition of “student-athlete.”  As for how we Milwaukee Panthers should feel, I would say that the reaction for those of us who came after Pearl left will be a lot different than those who were here with him.  That’s not unfair, either.  Bruce Pearl and his program had a major impact on a lot of fans’ lives in the time he was here, and there are many who stay loyal to him even though his loyalty to our school has long since evaporated.

My reaction is nothing.  I just think the Journal-Sentinel should agree with that and make the correct judgment that this story has nothing to do with the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2010, just as Pearl himself has nothing to do with UWM anymore.

* Note: I took out a small comparison that received more attention then it should have.  MU fans took what I said as a claim that I saw an MU player in a CLK.  The point I’m trying to make is you can’t just assume what someone says as truth.  I probably shouldn’t have replied with the comment “It wasn’t Wes” and prodded the guy who actually believed one of his players is driving a CLK.

  1. The player that you are thinking of is Wesley Mathews and he just signed a huge contract with Portland.

    • Nope. I know who I was walking out of the Pro-Am with, and Wes hadn’t walked out yet (I think he was hanging back talking to fans)

      • “Of course, it’s also possible that a certain Marquette player drove out of the Milwaukee Pro-Am in a Mercedes CLK, but you can’t prove that …”

Well, apparently YOU can, because you were there and saw it. So give us a name, if you’re so sure there’s a Marquette player on the take.

      • This was blown out of proportion; I’m taking it out of the piece because it was such a small part and everyone’s attention is drawn to something that wasn’t the focus of the argument.

  2. Man someone has a nice car… must be illegal…great article just awesome. UWM vs. MU are u joking?

  3. Maybe, just maybe it is included in the UWM section because the MJS has no Volunteer section. It is news because he was at UWM, just like everytime KO, Crean, Majerus make headlines the articles appear in the Marquette section. Everyone is not out to get UWM. Sorry to burst your bubble.

  4. If Crean did something shady, I’m sure it would be all connected to Marquette on JSOnline. I’m also sure you’d complain if Pearl had won a championship @ UT and it wasn’t connected to UWM on JSOnline.

  5. Problems for you there, Jimmy…. Pearl was doing this at UWM as reported by UWM to the NCAA – http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=5648545

    • Thanks for bringing it up; I’ll have something eventually on it, but some minor secondary violation from six years ago is the least of my concerns, and it shouldn’t be a big deal to anyone here. It reflects more on Pearl than us.
