Cleveland State (9-0) vs. Milwaukee (4-4)
U.S. Cellular Arena – Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Youngstown State had a lot of good players. Vytas Sulskis is all-conference worthy, Devonte Maymon has great upside, and Damien Eargle could develop into a beast for the Penguins. But YSU couldn’t put together a team effort, losing the game at the Cell on Thursday night.
Milwaukee played well enough to win. It was sloppy in many ways, the free throw shooting woes continue, but a win is a win (although it isn’t a noun).
Anthony Hill absolutely dominated the game last night, shooting 14 of 20 from the field and racking up 30 points to go with 12 rebounds. Saturday, he’ll be looking to do more of the same against Aaron Pogue and the Cleveland State front court.
He’ll need to, because where Youngstown State lacked the team chemistry and good shooting, the Cleveland State Vikings have got it in excess.
Both of those can be contributed to Norris Cole, the senior point guard and early favorite for Horizon League Player of the Year. The quick, strong Cole can dish the rock (3.8 assists per game) and fill the basket with his scoring (22 ppg). He is joined in the back court by Trevon Harmon (13.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and Jeremy Montgomery (11.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.7 apg).
A relatively decent front court of Aaron Pogue (7.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Tim Kamczyk (4.1 ppg, 3.8 rpg) will have the task of stopping Hill down low.
But the world revolves around Cole. His assist to turnover ratio isn’t explosive (29 assists to 24 turnovers) but that’s because he’s got the ball in his hands for a grand majority of the game. He’s not a particularly adept three-point shooter, but he negates that by being a dynamite slasher and getting to the free throw line a ridiculous amount.
Coach Gary Waters is out for revenge, having said that this week is “Revenge Week” for losses incurred by the Vikings against the teams they play this week. They have gotten their revenge so far, but Saturday night at the Cell will be their biggest test – the Vikings have not won at Milwaukee since the Clinton administration.
PantherU Pre-game: For those who want to join in the chalk talk, PantherU will have a gathering at Major Goolsby’s at 5 p.m. before the game tomorrow. We want to bring as many Panthers as possible together BEFORE tip-off, so we can get fed together and bring the Panther Pride all day long.
We’ll most likely be setting up shop at the booths right next to the radio broadcast booth. PantherU will provide season statistics for the Vikings and Panthers and talk about anything Panthers that people want to know.
I’ve got Miller pitchers for everyone who brings someone who has never been to a Panther game before; do your part and build the Panther fan base!
